About the Songleading Workshop

Cost - $245 (Early Bird) $295 (Regular Registration)

Any 9-12th grader with a passion for music, singing, or learning more about song leading.

  • Effectively teach a Jewish song
  • Songlead at a worship service or at a religious school, youth group or camp song session
  • Plan for a service or song session
  • Sing and play new Jewish melodies – adding to your repertoire
  • Sharpen your skills on all levels

Alan Goodis is a touring Jewish musician playing over 150 events a year. Born and raised in Toronto, Alan is a proud product of URJ Goldman Union Camp Institute. Noted for his dedication to building relationships and community through music, Alan tours throughout the US to serve as an Artist-In-Residence and performer at Temples, Youth Conventions and Jewish summer camps.

In 2009, Alan’s self-titled debut album launched him onto the Jewish music scene with its powerful vocals and bold melodies. Alan is a strong presence in the Reform Jewish movement to engage and empower Jewish youth and adults through music. He’s served as Musical Director for NFTY Convention and on faculty Hava Nashira. In 2011, he developed Nashir: an NFTY Teen Songleading Institute in partnership with the URJ to provide meaningful Songleader training to high school students. Alan has been a featured performer and presenter at URJ Biennials and the Wexner Foundation. In March 2014, Alan released his long awaited full-length studio album “This Place.” He lives in Chicago with his wife Codi and daughter Noa.

Both events are open to any Jewish teen in grades 9 to 12.


  • Registration is hosted by URJ Camp Newman. If you have attended a previous NFTY event or summer program at Camp Newman, you already have an account in our system.
  • Teens are expected to participate in the entire event. Fees are set at a full package rate and we cannot prorate registration.
  • All registered participants are placed in homestays, questions may be directed to nftycwr@urj.org
  • A limited number of scholarship discounts are available for this event. We ask that NEW scholarship applications be submitted no later than March 1st.

Flying: Due to the high interest in our flagship Songleading Workshop, NFTY CWR will be offering transportation from the Oakland International Airport (OAK).  If you are flying, you must book a trip that will arrive to the Oakland airport before 3:00pm on Friday, March 16th and will depart from the Oakland Airport after 2:30pm on Sunday, March 18th.  A member of the CWR team will contact you after you register to collect further information about arrival and departure from the airport and provide you with additional details.

Bus transportation is provided from various locations in the region. A minimum of 10 participants is required for a bus stop to run. Final transportation will be confirmed in the pre-event email.  Participants will select their method of transportation during registration. Bus routes require a minimum of 12 participants in order to run*

Participants may not drive themselves to or from the event or NFTY provided transportation. If traveling by car, the driver must be a parent or guardian over the age of 21.

Participant Families will receive a pre-event email within 1-2 weeks of the event. These confirmations include finalized travel information, packing list, contact information and other important event details.
NFTY recognizes that our participants may need to cancel after registering for an event. We have created a policy for refunds that considers our financial obligations for the event and our desire to refund as much of the registration fees paid as possible. All cancellations must be sent to the NFTY CWR staff via email by one of the Parent/Guardians listed during registration. We will not accept cancellations from TYG advisors or participants directly. Refunds are sent approximately six weeks after the conclusion of the event.

If you need to cancel, the registration fees you paid will be refunded as follows:

Through February 15, 2017 – 90% of the registration fees paid
Through February 22, 2018 – 75% of the registration fees paid
Through March 1, 2018– 50% of the registration fees paid

After March 1, 2017 – 0% of the registration fees paid.

75% of fees paid will be refunded if there is a documented medical emergency.

  • Linens: Sleeping bag, pillow and towel. Optional: Extra blanket
  • Toiletries: Shampoo, Soap, Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Deodorant
  • Appropriate, casual clothing for the weekend. The weather in Northern California during the spring may vary, we recommend layers as well as checking the weather forecast in the days leading up!
  • Optional Items: Kippah and Tallit, money for merchandise and NFTY notes (notes to write your friends), guitars and musical instruments, sports clothes/hiking shoes if you would like to participate in outdoor activities.
  • NFTY does its best to be green. Please bring a reusable water bottle for the bus rides & during the event.
  • Clothes for Big Fun: At every event we have a fun, Saturday night social which includes a dress up component. Stay tuned for the pre-event email, which will explain this event’s theme.
